That Last FTE Stole My Thunder
I know, I didn't believe it either.
I'm not quite sure this merits its own entry, but I'm still reeling from it. Generally speaking, I don't meet a lot of people who share my first name. Not that it's so exotic or so uncommon, but there just aren't a ton of us walking around. Certainly there haven't been other people with my first name at any of my previous employers. Sure, there have been one or two at school with me, but hey, those are larger populations, and these folks have typically been "international," which I think somehow adds an asterisk to their official score.
So you can imagine my surprise when I met the guy in the office next to mine. Same first name. Whoa, I thought, pretty cool. Kind of weird, but also pretty nifty. So we get to chatting a bit. Turns out that he just started too -- a couple months ahead of me. Hmmm, interesting. Oh, so you moved here? Yup. Where from? New York. New York, no kidding! Me too!
I couldn't believe it. We had pretty much the same profile, so much so it was borderline unnerving. I think it confused some of the other folks at the office as well, one of whom has taken to addressing us as "Big ____" and "Little ____" (though, unlike when relatives took a similar approach with me and my dad, I get to be "Big ____" this time).
The big takeaway? In case you were feeling delusional about how special and unique you were, just remember that there's a guy in the office next door who's exactly like you. Now get back to work, employee #207898 -- we're going to need the next round of those TPS reports by COB!
