Eagles New Year's Surprise
If I could ask for anything from the Eagles organization this New Year's Eve, it would be special guest coach Buddy Ryan
I've been struggling to come up with the precise metaphor/ cliche to describe how lackadasically the Eagles have played over the past month. Are they lame ducks? Sort of, only no one is assured of losing their job (except for Mike McMahon). The Texans are playing like lame ducks. Are they second-semester seniors? Not really, because that means they're coasting after working really hard for a long time, and implies that they've recently achieved something significant. That's more the Colts (or really any of the teams that knows better to risk anything in a meaningless game ahead of the playoffs).
In all honesty, I really don't have anything that works. Not in the precise way that I'd like -- something that sums up that these guys have pretty much stopped trying a while ago and are offering half an effort at best. Are they mailing it in? Did they pack it up? Have they skipped town? Checked out? Are they out there in name only? At least the offense has something of an excuse; the defense really doesn't have much to recommend it.
With that in mind, if the Eagles wanted to do at least one cool thing this season, they could shock us all by bringing back former Eagles coach BUDDY RYAN for one game only -- tomorrow against the Redskins. The Redskins need to win to make the playoffs -- they'll be trying extra hard. The Eagles weren't really going to try anyway. So why not give Andy Reid the week off (maybe he could get back on his diet, which appears to have, errr, suffered in recent weeks) and let Buddy goad these guys into a repeat of the Body Bag game? Let's have Buddy put bounties on Ramsey and Santana Moss. (Also, let's have someone make sure that Lavar Arrington goes out in Philly on Sunday night and haas a really really good time.) If the Eagles can't give us important wins, they can at least give us vengeful violence and attempts to injure.
(And it's a foregone conclusion that the peoples in Philly would love this. I really didn't appreciate at the time how Buddy Ryan was the most perfectly appropriate coach for any sports team in Philadelphia history. I don't necessarily imagine that this flatters the region's sports fans, but it sure does feel true. Also, Buddy definitely got the loudest ovation at the Reggie White tribute from a few weeks back -- maybe the only thing that deserved a cheer during the excreable loss to C@L.)
Also, MERRY NEW YEAR! See you in the future!
