Which Day of Christmas Is This Again?

Five (5) delicate snacks before I leave C@L for the holidays

'Tis the season! Whilst previous holiday seasons may have brought out the money-grubbing cynic in me, this year I've got nothing but visions of sugarplums dancing in my head. I have lights in my windows, a holographic snowman, and cardboard Santas + reindeer taped to my wall (though they keep falling down; sigh).

Anyhoo, before I split C@L for 2005, I figured I'd offer up some quick hits on the holidays and the last couple weeks here in C@L:

More Well Than Sick, I'll Admit: so I shall take back some of the things I may have said in earlier posts about C@L band Harvey Danger, the erstwhile PST darlings (quick sidenote: I am extremely confident that "erstwhile PST darlings" has never been written before; this is me, breaking new ground for the English language!) have earned their way back into my good graces. KEXP keeps playing this unreleased Christmas song of theirs called "Sometimes You Have To Work On Christmas" and I really like it. (You can download it here.) It's just a charming little holiday song, along the lines of "I Want An Alien For Christmas" by Fountains of Wayne. Also worth noting is the fact that KEXP keeps playing "Fairytale of New York" by the Pogues. As in, I've heard it four times in the past two weeks, and I don't listen to the radio that much. This is all a long way of saying that KEXP continues to amaze. It's also a long way of saying that, in the spirit of the holidays, I'm willing to give Harvey Danger a second chance. Whatchoo Talkin' 'Bout, Everyone!

I've Been A Bad Customer: would you believe that last night was the first time I'd gone to movie since moving to C@L? I've watched plenty of movies, mind you, I just haven't paid for the full-on experience (I'm partial to the 3 for $25 shelf at Hollywood video). I'm not sure if that's my fault or the movie industry's. Probably a little of both. Anyhoo, I watched Syriana last night, and I liked it. It could have been a little leaner, but hey, I dug it. Though I mostly think I dug it because I "completely and entirely agreed with its worldview and political perspective."

I've Solved My Pizza Problem: another big confession: I've eaten pizza like twice since I moved out here. I don't want to get down on the pizza too much, but, er, it, er, um, isn't always so good. (But the burgers and the seafood freakin rawk, so there are tradeoffs. Would you believe that even T & R Pizza is well above the C@L average? I wonder what Ben from 12/06/2005 would think about that!) Generally speaking, I just hadn't been eating very much pizza over the past couple months. On a buddy's recommendation, I picked up some pizza dough the other night and made my own. And it was pretty good! Go figger. (I would have never, and I mean, never made my own pizza in the Citay. It just doesn't make sense with a shop on every corner selling giant slices for $2, even if they are, ahem, reheated.)

It's All Getting Better From Here: every day from today until June 21 will be longer than the one before it. Seasonal Affective Disorder (which appears to be particularly acute in this fair city, though it's not really all that much more dark than any of the big cities back east), be gone! Seriously, I was really getting bored with the whole "it's dark when I go to work and dark four hours before I go home" thing.

Dear Mary Geyer,: if you're out there, I have all of your Christmas cards. You really need to talk to the good people at the Post Office because I keep getting your mail. Maybe this post will show up the next time you Goo, err, I mean Live Search your name!

Anyways, I hope you and yours have a lovely holiday. I'd have sent cards, but I decided that I wouldn't do that until I'm 30. Also, I'm kind of disorganized about things like that. So you'll have to wait a little while longer!

And to all a good night!

Should be called "80th&Amsterdam Pizza"

...since location is the only reason to patronize this non-descript pizza place. The pizza is mediocre to start out with, but their knack for reheating slices that have been sitting out for hours doesn't help.

And, in contrast, my Caesar's Palance summary:

Best Neapolitan pizza on UWS

If you want a great old-fashioned slice on the Upper West Side, Caesar's is the place to go. The calzones are equally good, and an excellent value.
