Good Will Always Triumph Over Evil Because Florida St. Kickers Are Marginally More Terrible Than Penn State Kickers

The Someone-Make-A-Kick-Because-I-Really-Need-To-Pee Bowl

Would you look at that! Penn State defeats Florida State 26-23 in the Orange Bowl, a.k.a. the most painful-to-watch triple-overtime football game in history. I don’t think I’ve spoken to anyone whose reaction to the game was anything but, “That game just WOULD NOT END” – and these are West Coast people, who at least had the benefit of three extra hours of time-zone lag. Some quickies on the telecast:

And We’ll Be Right Back With A Live Performance From Aerosmith, And Maybe The Second Half: so the game was long. Really long. With triple overtime, this is bound to happen. But even with the overtimes, this game didn’t have to go as late as it did. The commercial breaks (especially in the second half and into overtime) were frequent and lengthy. Once the game went into extra time, you think you’d want to keep the intensity up and just let the kids play. Oh no. Not while the many virtues of Pontiac remained underdiscussed! And I shan’t even go into the length of the halftime break. Unreal.

Snide Comments In Re: The Commercialization Of College Athletics: after spending a few moments playing the “Call out the logos as you see them and try to find a moment where there isn’t a corporate brand identifier onscreen,” someone spotted a banner with “orangebowl.org” written on it behind one set of goalposts:

“Dot org, huh? Like this isn’t a for-profit enterprise?”

“At least it didn’t say E-D-U.”

What The Coaches Really Said In Their Postgame Chat At Midfield: I can’t imagine them saying anything other than the following:

“Good game out there tonight, Joe.”

“Great game, Bobby.”

“I really need to take a piss.”

“Me too.”

“Freakin kickers.”

(Seriously. These dudes are not young. Their respective bladders are not designed for games of this length. Also, I hope Texas wins tonight.)

I just can't cheer for Mack Brown after he deserted UNC. And the kids at USC seem to be good guys with lots of football talent. I have no problem with them winning three straight.

Go Trojans! (Beat Mack!)

And I really can't argue with that; generally speaking, I'm a big fan of the "revenge" theme in re: sports TV shows.
