Can The Nerdbirds Do It?
This article will include my karma-killing Super Bowl XL (tm) prediction
C@L almost has football fever. They think they're fired up about the game. They do. You see pockets of excitement around town -- the checkout dudes at the supermarket wearing Nerdbird hats, some jerseys at the office, a Nerdbirds flag on the occasional flagpole, the 12 banner flying atop the Space Needle. (I don't count the jerseys on the employees of the EMPor the Sci-Fi Museum because Paul Allen own those things too. Disqualified!) Still, there are definitely people who are pumped.
At the same time, as with most things out here on the Left Coast, folks are a little more mellow about it. Sure, they'd like to see the Nerdbirds win, but no one's going to get too bent out of shape if they don't. People won't be despressed tomorrow at work if the Nerdbirds lose. Certainly the good people of Pittsburgh have a lot more invested in this evening's contest than the environmentally sensitive denizens of C@L! If the Stillers lose, expect a lot of absenteeism in the Pittsburgh area tomorrow. I might even go so far as to suggest that the people of Philadelphia were more interested in their football team this past week than the people of C@L! Of course, you can't blame the people of C@L for that one; there's just much less black-on-black crime with the Nerdbirds franchise.
All that said, I'm pulling for the home team. It'd be fun to be in a city that won the Super Bowl (errrr, it, ummmm, goes without saying that, ummmm, I've, errrrr, never been in one of those). And this Nerdbirds team is certainly agreeable enough to root for (if not necessarily inspirational).
As much as I'm pulling for them, though, I just don't think the Nerdbirds have enough to beat the Steelers. The Steelers are favored in the game for a reason -- they've beaten up three straight opponents, including the Colts, all on the road. And they've won by smacking the other teams in the mouth. Smacking teams in the mouth is a very reliable strategy for winning football games. And I think that the Steelers will smack the Nerdbirds in the mouth today. I don't think the Nerdbirds will blow it -- I think they'll play well -- but I don't think they'll play well enough, especially on defense. I think Pittsburgh wins the Super Bowl: Steelers 24, Nerdbirds 13.
(Of course, I'm hoping my prediction will destroy any chance the Steelers have of winning this game. I'm on the record as rooting against them, and have maintained an uncanny ability to pick incorrectly this NFL season. Let's hope it's enough to beat the Steelers!)
