My Quick Comments On Comments
Don't blame me, blame the robo-spamming jerks who were backfilling ThatKid with their penis-enlargement claptrap
As all seven loyal readers may have noticed, ThatKid now requires registration in order to leave a comment. Rest assured that the steering committee wrestled with this issue long and hard before making what was admittedly a very difficult decision. While we liked being the kind of web site that was open to the world with as few barriers to participation as possible, our hand was forced by the relentless onslaught of the penis-enlargement industry. In other words, I got sick of the every-couple-days ritual of cleaning the spam out of the site's comments.
While the comments had been spammed in the past, the past couple weeks have been especially bad. Can't really explain it, but I knew something was afoot when I checked my web stats and noticed that the I was getting a lot of search traffic from people looking for "link http //www.pills-to-enlarge.com/" -- which smells like someone who was relentlessly looking for the results of their comment-spamming campaign. (This is of course very different from last month, when I momentarily had the market cornered on people looking for Mike Missanelli-related news items -- seriously, I was on the first page of a couple of the engines. But that's a story for an entirely different posting.)
This is all a long way of saying that if you want to leave comments on ThatKid, you'll need to register with TypeKey. They don't ask for much, and it should only take a second, but it still bums me out just a little bit. I hope it doesn't discourage you from commenting. In fact, I'd like to take a moment to more actively encourage comments. I didn't realize how excited I would be about the comments until I was writing this thing for a while. But I totally dig on them, if only because it confirms that somebody actually read and thought about what I wrote. So if you've ever been on the fence about leaving a comment, the tie should go to the comment -- the more the better. Ask a question, tell me I'm a goober, remind me of something I should know about. It's all good.
Unless, of course, you post links to www.pills-to-enlarge.com.
