Birds Repruhzent for Minister Of Defense
Yes, I'm just that desperate: I watched the Hall Of Fame coverage on NFL Network
Okay okay, guilty as charged. In an act of presumptive pro football desperation, I actually watched some of the Hall Of Fame induction coverage yesterday on the NFL Network. Pitiful, I know. With only one day to go before the first preseason game, I couldn't help myself -- I sat through some seriously boring almost-football. (In all fairness, it was mostly on in the background while I took care of some digital errands.)
At the risk of creating The Blog Post That Redefines Irrelevant And Zero-Value-Add Blog Posts, some quick observations on the Hall Of Fame ceremony (note: this is being typed whilst I listen to Rob Charry shouting at a random caller about Randall Cunningham's Hall Of Fame credentials on the WIP streaming feed -- good times indeed!):
Select Birds Attend In Reggie Throwbacks: Prince Jeffrey fired up the private jet (Jeffrey Lurie has a private jet? How did that happen? Is he really that rich?) to bring a select group of current Eagles to the induction ceremony: McNabb, Dawkins, Trotter, Runyan, Kearse, Akers, Mike Bartrum (huh?), and William (Tra) Thomas. Class move for sure. But the part I could not get over was that the current Birds all wore Reggie White throwback jerseys to the ceremony, and then sat together in the crowd. Dude. I know I'm 30 years old and should be a little more mature than this, but I thought that was pretty cool. There. I said it.

Where Was Buddy?: I didn't see a shot of Buddy Ryan, though Sara White did mention him in her speech on Reggie's behalf. And that's when I asked myself -- where was Buddy? Please tell me he was there. Please tell me that Prince Jeffrey invited him, or the White family invited him, or the freakin league invited him. Please, please, please. Buddy needed to be there. Maybe he was and just didn't show up on TV? I really need some confirmation on this. Also, it's about that time of year where we remember that the 1991 Eagles were the best defense of the past three decades. For the avoidance of doubt.
Just One More Eagles-Related Moment: they had a shot of McNabb shaking Warren Moon's hand at the end of the ceremony; I dunno, it was also kind of cool, mostly in the context of "The persistence of the black quarterback stereotypes makes me very very sad for America."
How Bout Them Cowboys: classy presentation from Troy Aikman. You know, I never would have guessed that Aikman would end up being the Cowboy I Hated The Least In Hindsight, but he's actually on my good list (in terms of sports-TV characters). For a guy who got knocked on his ass by the Eagles more than a few times (including 11 in one game in 1991), Aikman has always been fair and level-headed in his televised assessments of the current versions of the Birds (and seems to be down with McNabb, of which I wholeheartedly approve). Of course, they also showed lousy troublemaker Michael Irvin (grumble grumble), and made mention of Emmitt Smith, who I assume was off somewhere else popping his helmet off and pointing at himself after running through yet another tractor-trailer sized hole in the second half of a garbage time game. The crime of those Cowboys teams (and this should really be its own post) is that the offensive line will never get the credit it deserves for making Emmitt Smith's career. Anyway. I'll stop now.
Did I Mention The Eagles Play Tonight?: I'm about twenty minutes away from pulling on my jersey for tonight's preseason opener. The Donovan McNabb cardboard cutout is in effect. An appropriate junkfood menu is in the process of being composed. And don't you worry -- there's plenty of room on the Hank Baskett bandwagon!
Go Birds.
