Happy Turkey Day From The 2-1-5

Thankful to be back in Philly for Thanksgiving

So I hadn't actually been in Philly since last spring (in a my-birthday-Easter timeframe). What a treat to be back! In a lot of ways, it's sort of odd to be here in person since my internet consumption habits make me feel like I'm virtually here quite a bit as it is. That is, you read the Philly papers every morning and listen to the goofy sports-talk radio enough, and you get a pretty good pulse for what's going on.

But nothing substitutes for the real thing; I will need to ingest some celebratory cheesesteaks over the weekend to complete the experience.

Anyhoo, been a bit busy/ on the road of late. Some random quick hits from the past two weeks:

Travel Schedule: So over the past three weeks, I've gone to New Jersey, New York, North Dakota (though admittedly that was unscheduled), C@L (for three days), Amsterdam (layover), London, New York, New Jersey, Philly (current state), back to Jersey (Saturday), and finally C@L again (Sunday, and hopefully in time for at least the second quarter of the Birds' game). Essentially, I was really wasn't in C@L for the month of November. The bedbugs must miss me.

Anything To Declare? Hadn't been to London in a couple years. Good times indeed, though the work schedule whilst I was there was a little harrowing. Still, it was a pleasure as always. Had some phenomenal meals, enjoyed the London nightlife (always a pleasure), and even managed to eat at McDonald's after midnight (which I don't think I'd done since this summer's mission to the World Cup). I dunno, I guess McDonald's just tastes better in Europe? Either that or it's the only thing that's open and serving junk food at 2 am. Also, note well that London is insanely expensive right now; riding the subway for one stop costs three pounds. At an exchange rate of (GULP) 1.91, that means a subway fare is $5.73. Yikes.

Note: all cameras and video photography are forbidden

This Piece Of Poertry Is Meant To Do Harm: caught The Ark on Monday, November 20 at the Bowery Ballroom in New York. I had wanted to check them out in C@L a couple weeks back, but they had to cancel due to Fox News-related death threats. Great show, though surprisingly not well attended. These guys just haven't broken yet, but you get the feeling they will. Their schtick is a little The Darkness, a little Mamma Mia (in that they verge on a Scandinavian pop musical), and a little Queen. But they sound great, the songs are catchy, and the lead singer is a genuine rock star. Also, if you're looking to meet Scandinavian people, The Ark is the show for you.

The Sixers Aren't Very Good: watched the Sixers play the Bucks last night on local TV. AI didn't play because of his wisdom teeth. Webber didn't play because he wants to be traded (note: not the official reason). Dude. The lineup the Sixers were trotting out there is grim. Iguadola is the freakin' point guard (and he wasn't bad, though he still needs a more consistent offensive/ scoring game to really be a star), and Willie Green is taking a lot of shots? Yikes. It's looking pretty grim out there. Still, they could/ should have won that game were it not for (a) completely ridiculous officiating in the last five minutes that just kept sending Michael Redd to the line (it was vulgar how bad it was) and (b) Kyle Korver being physically manhandled by Ruben Patterson, who beat up on him like a playground bully. Someone tell me again when baseball season starts?

Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours -- make sure you overeat and pass out on the couch! It's what the pilgrims would have wanted.
