I'm A Total Sucker For Wins On Monday Night Football
Just when I thought that I was out, they pull me back in
Yup, I'm officially into it again.
Sure, it helps that most of the teams in the NFC are inconsistent/ playing like warmed-over crap, but the Birds are in the thick of the playoff hunt! At 6-6! Sure, they aren't going to actually win anything, but at least I get to pay attention (with some tiny degree of optimism) to at least the next two weeks. If they win one of the next two games, they're still in it. Which means they can beat the Skins and honk one to the Giants or vice versa (especially if Carolina beats the Giants this week) and still be worthy of my media-consumption attentions a week later.
This is good news.
In all honesty, I'd been hating on the Birds of late. Thought they were playing kind of gutless. Thought they weren't as passionate about the game as the fans were. You know, crazy stuff like that. But now I get to follow the next couple weeks and not feel like I'm getting cheated.
My top five (5) stories coming out of tonight's game:
(1) Jeff Garcia, Scrappy Leader (and not Source Of All Of The Team's Problems): my my, those fickle Philly fans were out for blood tonight! They go from booing an obviously injured Jeff Garcia (who had taken a couple horrifying shots from the Panthers' defensive line) to worshipping their cagey veteran hero playmaker! Sure, the people (as demonstrated on various online polls) want A.J. Feeley, but Jeff Garcia won them over. Of course, the downside of this is that now we'll have to endure "Is Garcia better than McNabb" blather for the rest of the year. Whatever. The reporters get paid too.
(2) Li-To! Li-To! Li-To!: so that's two he's won for this team. That counts for something. He definitely gets invited to the Pro Bowl now, and maybe he helps to restore some of the swagger back there in the Birds' secondary.
(3) Nothing Quite Like A Turnover-Prone Opposing QB: it's really nice when your opponent is more excited about losing the game than you are. Drew Bledsoe, Jake Delhomme, we're looking in your direction. It just helps. It's like your opponenet double-faulting on match point. It's just nice. The Dawkins pick was just particularly horrific. Though you have to credit the Eagles blitzing and jumping at Delhomme on the second one -- they knew he was throwing the fade, and they knew that jumping up would force a high throw. Good on you, embattled Jim Johnson!
(4) The Receivers Are Going To Work Out: they're young across the board, they still drop too many balls, but remember how grim the wideout situation seemed just a year ago? Wow. They're young and fast and can do cool tricks like that one-handed snag Stallworth made along the sideline.
(5) Dudes Who Are Getting Cut: we'll miss you Michael Lewis. We'll miss you a lot less, Dhani Jones. We'll feel badly for you and so we won't be honest about what a bust you were, Jerome McDougle.
The dream of an Eagles - Nerdbirds tilt at Qwest field on wildcard weekend is alive and well!
Additional Tuesday Morning Note: when asked if there was an option for Brian Westbrook to throw on the play where he lined up at quarterback, Andy Reid issued a smirking denial and then added, "The play was for him to run past those defenders and score a touchdown." I guess it's all smiles when they win!
