Impromptu Three-Day Weekend
What do you mean they cut the power?
At least the alarm on my cell phone went off. Otherwise, I might have slept even later than I did. And I think it's somewhat telling that I was able to stumble past the flashing clocks and dead computer before my futile attempts to flip on the bathroom light (oh, and you can be sure I flipped it back and forth three times) convinced me that there was no electricity to be had on the unfashionable side of Queen Anne Hill (or at least my apartment).
Yeah, so we had a little wind storm out here in C@L last night. I lucked into a last-minute ticket to the Nerdbirds game, which I fully expected to be played in monsoon conditions. But the storm held off -- it rained a little during the game, and it was windy, but nothing like the doomsday storm (bearing down on us like a shotgun full of snow) that the local news blathermonkeys had predicted.
(Thus, the Nerdbirds can't blame the weather for their all-around pitiful showing. Were it not for a season-ending matchup with Tampa, I might argue that this team wasn't even going to make the playoffs. But it'll be tough for them to lose that game, thus keping alive my dream of an Eagles - Nerdbirds playoff tilt on Wild Card Weekend live from Qwest field. Keep your fingers crossed!)
Said doomsday storm that the local news blathermonkeys had predicted kicked in after midnight, and it was pretty serious. What with the howling and the objects flying into/ impacting other objects, it woke me up a bunch of times, and I had a couple thoughts of "I wonder if a branch could fly off that tree, through my window and impale me" or "I hope my grill doesn't fly off the porch and destroy someone's car." You know, rational, middle-of-the-night-type thoughts.
Things are a little chaotic in the Greater King County area this morning. One million people (including yours truly) "are without power" as the news cliche goes. The 520 bridge broke and is closed until at least noon today. Ungodly amounts of traffic have been reported throughout the area. My employer's campus is closed, so a solid chunk of the population in C@L is working from home today. Or Tully's, as the case may be, since some of us don't have power at our homes, and we can't plug our wireless routers into candles.
The scene here at Tully's is pretty impressive. This would be the Tully's on Queen Anne hill, located directly across from the Starbucks. The very dark and very closed Starbucks I might add! You go, Tully's. Sure, the line is out the door (and has been out the door for the hour I've been here) and the baristas look like their heads are about to explode ("Do we have any more blueberry bread? No? That's the last of it? We need to do something!"), but hey, they're getting it done. And what with the free wi-fi and (more importantly) the available power outlets (one of which I was able to snag), I see myself spending the better part of the day here. Which, all things considered, isn't so bad. Free internet, lots of caffeine, a dwindling supply of pastries -- sounds pretty much like Friday at the office. Sure, I'd prefer to be able to play four hours of Gears of War on my day off, but we all have our crosses to bear.
Here's to my first-ever Wind Day!
