It Was A Dark And Stormy Night

Omens abound at the Sonics - Knicks game!

I really should have known that this wasn't going to go well for the Sonics.

I usually park on the Queen Anne side of Key Arena, most nights rougly halfway home to my apartment (never mind what that says about the absurdity of driving at all -- trust me, it makes sense). But my plan for tonight had me heading to Capitol Hill for a post-Sonics going-away party, and so I parked on the EMP side of the C@L Center. A block South of the McDonald's, actually.

So I park.

It's pouring out. Just horrible. Usually the C@L rain is a light but endless mist sort of thing, but this was a legit storm. Coming down hard and heavy, lots of wind, really miserable stuff. Proud denizen of C@L that I am, I typically eschew an umbrella in favor of a hood, but not tonight. Tonight you needed an umbrella.

I cross the Fifth Avenue in front of McDonald's, and wait on the corner opposite the Sci-Fi Hall Of Fame beneath the concrete monorail track. There's a couple there, about ten years older than I am, and the man is eating a hamburger, half of it still wrapped in its McDonald's wrapper, his own sort of jury-rigged In-N-Out meal.

As I'm staring at his hamburger, trying to figure out its precise McDonald's product SKU and thinking it odd that people this old would pull the high-school move of stopping in for a fast-food snack before the game, a car comes tear-assing down Broad and detonates a gigantic puddle directly in front of us.

Yup. I was the victim of the universally recognized visual representation of "having a bad day." The thing was, I really wasn't having a bad day at all. It was a pretty good day. Quite ironic, I know!

Igottatellya, the experience was pretty intense. The water was cold and there was a lot of it. I was drenched (and I'm talking soaked through) down my entire left side. Head, face, jeans, all soaked. It was like I stood too close the the flume ride -- I actually felt some physical impact from the splash. Only instead of being refreshing and fun, it was 45 degrees and windy and I was still a solid couple blocks from the stadium. Not. So. Sweet.

Post Soaking Jan 7 2007

I dried out by the end of the second quarter. The game didn't improve my mood. The Sonics got crushed by an allegedly hapless Knicks team. What I learned: Eddy Curry is actually fatter than Danny Fortson; Danny Fortson is actually playing for the Sonics; this is not positive for the Sonics; Ray Allen had a dodgy game, and the Sonics didn't deal well with Ray-Ray getting doubled; the Sonics got completely manhandled by Eddy Curry under the basket; at least I have Jamal Crawford and Eddy Curry on my imaginary basketball teams (49 points between them).

Pretty lame for the Sonics. They really didn't look very good. In a moment of Philly-meets-C@L, folks were definitely chanting "Let's Go Seahawks" as they filed out of Key Arena.

Amen, folks.

Bonus Note: you gotta love that you can go to the pool hall/ high-end bowling joint on Friday and have the music be someone's RJD2 mix. They even played a remix of "Final Frontier" that I hadn't heard before. This town just has outstanding taste in music.
