New Golf Clubs, Sonics, And Photos Of Food

And the only reason I'm even writing this is that there's a game on that I'm interested in watching Were it not for the US U-20s playing in quarterfinal of the U-20 World Cup this fine morning, I probably wouldn't have even gotten my act together for even this meager post. Such is the unique combination of too much salaried activities and the traditionally delayed commencement of summer here in C@L -- it's just been tough to find too much time to play with the electric internets. (Actually, that's not entirely true. I spent a lot of time on the electric internets last weekend, but that was in the service of commerce. I finally dealt with myself and bought a proper set of golf clubs. My current clubs were fine, I guess, but they were older than I am, and, well, I wanted the new hotness kind that (a) go...

Rejoining The Bedded Classes

In which I tuck my air mattress into its travel bag and buy a proper bed So I decided to move back in. Since the recent unpleasantness with the bedbugs, I've been sleeping on an air mattress. I just couldn't bring myself to buy another mattress only to have to throw it away should the bedbugs start offering enlistment bonuses to new recruits. Then, a little over a week ago, I got a relatively clean bill of health from the exterminator. I ordered these special (allegedly bedbug proof) mattress covers, and bought myself a bed. It's worth noting that in an otherwise monochromatic and/ or sleeting C@L day (my soccer game out at Marymoor in Redmond ended early on account of snow), the sun was out for about 30 minutes. And during those 30 minutes, I was able to assemble my new bed. I'm taking that as a good sign....

Sonics Lose, Bulls Gawk At Dance Team

And here I thought I was going to complain about Ray Allen getting snubbed for the All-Star Team I expected that today's post-Sonics-game post would be go roughly like this: Ray Allen got totally screwed out of the All-Star game because he's not flashy enough and, as a result, I am beginning to believe that the national sporting press really does have a big-market bias and that no one cares about C@L and the Pacific Northwest. I would emphasize my point by pointing to his stats over the past month: 30.4 ppg in the month of January (26.7 ppg for the season) on 49 percent shooting, 42.3 percent from three, and 4.8 assists per game. I would say that it's all the more impressive in the context of Rashard Lewis's absence and the fact that other teams realize that Ray is going to take pretty much all of the shots...

Thusday Night Karaoke in C@L

Quick hits on the karaoke scene last night at Ozzie's in Queen Anne I dragged my tired, lousy, out-of-shape ass to Ozzie's in Lower Queen Anne ("The LQA" to the locals, errr, or just me) last night to join some friends for karaoke and some drinks. (I mention the tired/ lousy/ out-of-shape thing because I met them immediately following a soccer game, a game which confirmed that I'm not quite match fit.) Good times at Ozzie's, as always. That's the thing about the karaoke -- even if you're not really in the mood for it, you can trust that 60 percent of the people in the joint definitely are. That is, even if you're cold, tired, and semi-cross from having run around a semi-frozen field in a losing effort against the team you like least in your co-rec soccer league, going to karaoke will brighten your mood. And why not:...

Seeing Mountains Doesn't Get Old (For Me, At Least)

I am not remotely bored of seeing Mt. Rainier majestically hovering in the distance As much as I might whinge about my daily commute across The Dread Evergreen Point Floating Bridge (that is, the 520 Bridge), the experience is not without its charms. That is, on certain clear mornings the Eastside-bound commuters are treated to a magnificent view of Mt. Rainier just as they round the first big bend on the 520 Bridge. In fact, on those mornings when there is a view of Mt. Rainier, there's usually a hiccup in the traffic flow, as each driver slows down to take a peak at the mountain looming to the south. And, as far as gaper delays go, I prefer the scenic-view-inspired ones to the traffic-citation ones. The Mt. Rainier thing continues to dazzle me. A July snowball fight in shorts on the glacier at Mt. Rainier National Park as part...

Cowboys Special Teams and the Jersey Shore

Of course Bill Parcells has a soft spot for the kid from Monmouth, New Jersey Whoa. Big weekend of football. The hometown Nerdbirds managed to pull one out thanks to the clumsy hands of Tony Romo. It was certainly a fun night in the stadium: I lucked into some great seats, the weather held out, and the home team won with a couple wild plays in the fourth quarter. I have much to say about the Eagles. But that's for another day; mostly I just want to say nice things about Brian Westbrook and marvel at how the Birds suddenly are a power football team. Also, one really doesn't know what to say about the G-Men. They're not terrible, but they just didn't really have their acts together. There are likely many disappointed people in North Jersey this evening. Speaking of Jersey, I snapped some semi-decent photos of Monmouth College's...

It Was A Dark And Stormy Night

Omens abound at the Sonics - Knicks game! I really should have known that this wasn't going to go well for the Sonics. I usually park on the Queen Anne side of Key Arena, most nights rougly halfway home to my apartment (never mind what that says about the absurdity of driving at all -- trust me, it makes sense). But my plan for tonight had me heading to Capitol Hill for a post-Sonics going-away party, and so I parked on the EMP side of the C@L Center. A block South of the McDonald's, actually. So I park. It's pouring out. Just horrible. Usually the C@L rain is a light but endless mist sort of thing, but this was a legit storm. Coming down hard and heavy, lots of wind, really miserable stuff. Proud denizen of C@L that I am, I typically eschew an umbrella in favor of a hood,...

If The Playoffs Started Today

Outstanding implications abound for both the Eagles and the Sixers Big week for the sports blathermonkeys in Philly. Not only do we have a suddenly resurgent Eagles team poised to make the playoffs in the NFC, but the biggest superstar playing in Philly (possibly ever) has just been traded to the Denver Nuggets. My oh my. Those two stories plus the release of the new Rocky movie and Invincible on DVD add up to a lot of sports-related media content flowing out of the Illadelph. I will be the first to admit that I thought that the Birds were done when Donovan went down. And, in a larger sense, they're still sort of done, since I don't see them challenging for anything more than a second-round playoff exit, but hey, a month ago -- having lost their most expensive offensive and defensive players, respectively -- they looked like 7-9 would...

Impromptu Three-Day Weekend

What do you mean they cut the power? At least the alarm on my cell phone went off. Otherwise, I might have slept even later than I did. And I think it's somewhat telling that I was able to stumble past the flashing clocks and dead computer before my futile attempts to flip on the bathroom light (oh, and you can be sure I flipped it back and forth three times) convinced me that there was no electricity to be had on the unfashionable side of Queen Anne Hill (or at least my apartment). Yeah, so we had a little wind storm out here in C@L last night. I lucked into a last-minute ticket to the Nerdbirds game, which I fully expected to be played in monsoon conditions. But the storm held off -- it rained a little during the game, and it was windy, but nothing like the doomsday...

Sonics - Ray-Ray = 3 Wins and Tough Defense?

I guess all it really took was an ankle injury to the Sonics' best player to convince them to play defense? Well would you look at that! The Sonics have won three games in a row (and four in a row at home), and even gutted out a nice win last night after giving up (wait for it) 70 points in the first half to the Warriors. And they've won the last three without all-around-best-player Ray Allen, who's out with an ankle injury. Sure, the wins came against the Hawks, the Hornets, and the Warriors, but hey, for a team that hadn't beaten much of anything/ anyone this year, we'll take it. I've spent a lot of time at Key Arena of late, attending the last five consecutive home games. It seems like a lot, but given that I didn't actually make my first trip until December, it mostly just...

Gears of Bedbugs

It's been a while since I complained about the bedbugs; really, we've reached something of a detente So I bought the Gears of War game last week. Couldn't be helped: (1) I didn't own any murdering games yet, and what's really the point with the next-gen consoles if you don't have a murdering game; (2) the commercial had the creepy Tears For Fears cover from the Donnie Darko movie, and well, I'm a sucker for clever marketing; (3) you can appreciate my passion for murdering digital representations of insects. Now is not the time to talk about the game, save for sharing the its goofy backstory, which feels especially relevant round these parts of late. That is, the setup with Gears of War is that there were all these killer insect monsters hiding beneath the Earth's surface who decide to pop out of the ground and conquer the humans. Chaos...

Snow Day in C@L

Did they really just cancel Tuesday in C@L due to an inch of snow that fell early last night? Woo-hoo! Was I ever fired up about my commute into the office this morning! Twenty-two minutes door-to-door (a weekday rush hour record) plus an absolutely primo parking spot (the likes of which one usually has to arrive by 6:30 am to secure -- not that I would actually know this, but I just assume). Instead of racing to make my 9 am, I'd have a solid 40 minutes to sip my coffee, fire off the day's opening salvo of electric mail, and peruse the sports sections of Philly.com. The reason for my surprisingly mellow morning? C@L is having a Snow Day! Yup. We had a little snow last night, the temperature dropped below freezing, and the city just completely shut down. No school for the kids, and lots of offices closed...

Curling the Rock in The House

It's sort of like shuffleboard on ice, only with Canadian accents and appropriate levels of game-specific jargon Prior to last night, my experience with the sport/ game of curling had been limited mostly to snippets of Olympic coverage in moments of February insomnia. I was pretty down with it, in a sort of team handball kind of way: I didn't know too much about it, but it looked like it would be pretty fun to play. Also, it definitely suggested a darts-and-bocce-you-can-down-cocktails-whilst-you-play-it vibe. Check, check, and check. Good times at the Granite Curling Club in North C@L last night (the only dedicated curling sheet in the continental U.S. west of North Dakota!). My quick hits on curling: Excellent jargon, as expected: as might be expected from a Canadian game, curling employs a most excellent catalog of game-specific jargon. The big grantie things that you push down the ice are called...

Two Things You Need To Know About Traffic In C@L

Every town has traffic; C@L is just a little funnier about it than most I'm about a year and two months into the adult experience of being a car commuter. As a New Yorker, I was spoiled by the subway for six years and change. Sure, you may have had to occasionally suplex old ladies out of the way for a spot on a crowded train, but the time between locations was relatively fixed. I liked the subway. I liked that I got to read on the subway AND listen to music if I so chose. And, of course, the people-watching was routinely spectacular. Now I gas-brake-honk it for two to three hours per day like the rest of the residents of the suburban/ exurban United States. My commute is about 13 miles each way. It takes about 50 minutes in the morning, and 75 minutes in the evening (but...

When C@L Recycles, We All Burn

Snapshot from the environmentally conscious cafeteria at work So I'm sitting in the charmingly appointed cafeteria at work the other day -- a lovely space whose soaring ceiling and massive windows are designed to maximize productivity and general well-being -- chatting with some buddies over the remains of a disappointing chocolate chip cookie. The work masters have been hiring of late, and the cafeteria is beginning to feel the strain of all the folks: longer lines and fewer and fewer places to sit. So you can imagine the chaos when the fire alarm began blaring a few minutes before 1 pm. A very crowded cafeteria needed to empty very quickly. The fire alarm at least seemed legit; I definitely recognized the smell of burning toast emanating from the direction of the kitchens. We dutifully gathered up the detritus from our lunches (sushi comma again) and made our way in an...

C@L repruhzents at Bumberschnitz

It's sort of like a citywide Meetings, only with lots of high school kids and hippies Much like learning to fawn over Death Cab For Cutie or savor a tasty bag of Dick's, attending my first Bumbershoot brings me ever closer to legitimacy/ mad street cred as a C@L resident. As I learned in the charming entry on Wikipedia, Bumbershoot is "an annual international music and arts festival held in Seattle, Washington. One of America's largest local arts festivals, it takes place every Labor Day weekend at the 74-acre (299,000 m²) Seattle Center, which was built for the 1962 World's Fair." You betcha! And the funny name? It's an old-timey word for umbrella (Wikipedia mentioned something about it being a "portmanteau"), which, wink-wink, makes a lot of sense here in Rain City. Or at least it would make sense if Bumbershoot took place in the fall, winter, or spring. in...

Hollywood Celebrates ThatKidInTheCorner Day!

In which I go to see Invincible and wonder, What if the entire world really does revolve around me? You'll have to forgive a bit of narcissism on my behalf this Saturday morning. On August 25th, Hollywood released both a Disney film about the Philadelphia Eagles, Invincible, and a Broken Lizard movie about drinking games, Beerfest. The trailer for Invincible features guys in a bar doing an E-A-G-L-E-S chant; the Beerfest commercial shows a guy shooting quarters. Birds and drinking games. On the same day. So you really can't blame me if I think this is all somehow about me. (Do you ever secretly wonder if all the other people you encounter on a given day are actually robotic drones filling out the ranks in the gigantic RPG simulation that is your life? Me neither. Never once.) Admittedly, I have yet to see the Beerfest movie (though late-night text messages...

Sasquatch, Yeti, Wookie

In which we cross the mountains to the sunny side of the state in pursuit of high-end indie rock (and Beck) At the risk of becoming one of those transplants in the Northwest who does nothing but complain about the weather, allow me a moment to note that the rainy season (all nine months of it) was supposed to be over by now. That is, Memorial Day weekend was not supposed to be 50 degrees and dreary. At least that's what I was told. In all fairness, we had already hedged against the C@L weather by making plans to attend the Sasquatch festival at The Gorge -- two hours and change from C@L and on the other side of the mountains. Maybe "making plans" is a bit strong. We had made a plan to make plans. Actually making plans (instead of a plan to make a plan) might have yielded...

Winter Getaway (Spring Edition)

It really shouldn't have taken me this long to get to Whistler So I get it now. Since moving out here to C@L, I've witnessed a fair number of conversations regarding the Whistler ski resort. Most went along the lines of, "DudeWhistleristotallysweetWhenarewegoingagainandcanIgetaride?" That is, people seemed pretty down with the Whistler thing. I wasn't sure if this was just generic "I like skiiing" hype (which is fair, but to a non-skier isn't necessarily completely compelling) or if there was something special about the Whistler mission that would differentiate it versus other ski trips. I get it now: the reason everyone's always speaking so fondly of Whistler is that Whistler is really effing awesome. And, as stated, I'm not even really much of a skier. The killer is that I was sort of on the fence about going. I had been on the road for work for the week previous, and...

Amateur Food Porn: Final Review

The film was passable; the sandwich was absurd In the interests of fair play, good vibes, and a general passion for sandwich photography, we're going to do a little follow-up piece to last week's posting about amateur food pornographer Brangien Davis and her entry in the C@L Times Three-Minute Movie contest. Though there's still time for the rest of us to submit our entries in the contest, Ms. Davis' "An Open Letter To Ham" has been posted for all the world to see. As a first-time film, it's appropriately cute. Framed as a faux letter to a former lover, Ms. Davis discusses the longing and regret she's felt for ham since she decided to become a vegetarian. Though the whole gambit is a bit obvious and dated (I mean, who really writes proper letters anymore anyway?), and the humor relies heavily on voice-over (a no-no according the film school intelligentsia),...

Just For The Halibut

In which I detail my weekend fishing trip; that's right, fishing trip Mixed it up a little bit this weekend. A friend generously invited me to join him for opening day of halibut season on Puget Sound. Opening day sounded good (an event, at the very least), and I knew I really enjoyed eating halibut. My buddy had all the gear: the house with the dock, the boat, and the sundry rods and tackle boxes and little fishing doodads. Most importantly, he had a working knowledge of how in the hell you go halibut fishing in Puget Sound and the patience to deal with me. I'll admit that I was pretty excited to check it out. Generally speaking, I haven't done a terribly good job of getting out of the greater C@L area and exploring the region. I mean, people are always talking all this game about how "beautiful" and...

Amateur Food Porn

Someone In C@L Decided To Take Photos Of Sandwiches And Didn't Call Me? The text message came in around noon on Sunday: Theres [sic] a story in the about taking pictures of a ham sandwich in the [C@L] times arts section today..you could totally beat this woman in this film short contest Ahem. A story about taking pictures of ham sandwiches in one of the C@L papers? Should I be worried that the entire world is revolving around me again? I immediately fired up the C@L Times web site and searched for "ham sandwich." The search worked; I found the article -- it even highlighted the word "ham" in the page. Additional research revealed that the C@L Times is apparently running a contest called Three-Minute Masterpiece, in which amateur filmmakers are invited to submit (very) short films (180 seconds max) shot with digital equipment. Reps from the paper will select...

A Bag Of Dick's

Nothing Satisfies Quite Like A Nice Big Bag Of Dick's! One of my favorite things about living in C@L is the easy availability of what has become my favorite treat. It's the sort of thing that you can't get just anywhere -- in fact, I'd never even tasted it before I came to C@L. But an important part of moving to a new town is being open to new experiences. You need to challenge yourself to try new things -- things you might not necessarily even be so comfortable with. That is, after a long day at work, a night at Key Arena, or maybe even a hard-fought game of footy, nothing hits the spot quite like a nice big bag of Dick's. I remember the first time I had a bag of Dick's. It was before I moved out to C@L. I was visiting a friend. We spent a...

Four Freakin' Bucks

This must be why they're talking about moving to Bellevue Lovely evening at Key Arena last night. I find that I'm probably not writing about the Sonics nearly enough, given that I've actually attended a solid 60 percent of the team's home games this year to date. If we were to summarize the team's performance to date, we would have to say that they were pretty disappointing. After winning more than 50 games last season, they're going to be lucky to win 30 this year. Many theories have been floated, mostly regarding the defection of 2004-05 coach Nate McMillan to rival I-5ers the Blazers. Me, I'm more about last year being a contract year for Ray Allen and this year being a coasting and vesting year for #34. My exec sum of all of this tends to fall somewhere along the lines of "Like I needed another crappy NBA team...

It's The Act Of Purchasing That Counts

Just because retail therapy works (every time) doesn't make me a bad person For a wide variety of reasons, I was feeling a little bummed out on Sunday afternoon. By 3 pm, I just really wasn't feeling it. I didn't really have much of a plan for the rest of the day, and while I was happy to have some time to myself -- especially on such a clear and sunny day -- I still felt a little anxious. Sure, I could futz around, take some photos of junk food, maybe work on my imaginary soccer team(s), but was that really going to be enough? That's when I decided that I was, in fact, worth it. I was going to buy something. Something marvelous! I got on the walkie talkie with a buddy, and within minutes we'd hatched a plan to facilitate some emergency money-spending. Maybe it was the uncommon...

Just Here For the Doughnuts

Is there still time for a doughnut resurgence? It happened again on Friday. I've been complaining for a while that the doughnut, as a general concept, doesn't get nearly enough love/ respect. Until the carb-counting thing kicked in, we all couldn't get enough of bagels. We made sandwiches on bagels, launched bagel chains, and invented increasingly exotic flavors of bagel. Doughnuts enjoyed a brief resurgence of popularity with the Krispy Kreme thing, but never to the degree of bagels (and oh did I long for a club sandwich served on a glazed doughnut! Oh did I long!). And, to be honest, the whole Krispy Kreme thing was always a little low-end; all sugar, no substance. So you can imagine my excitement when I moved to C@L and discovered Top Pot Doughnuts. Finally, someone with the guts to step up and own the high-end/ premium doughnut market! And own it they...

The Sopranos Do C@L

The Things You Don't Notice When C@L Isn't Even A Glint In Your Eye Having spent the better part of my life in the Philadelphia, New Jersey, and New York areas with an Italian surname, I've heard my fair share of Sopranos-related humor. And that's understandable, if not completely fair. People who aren't from the Northeast part of the U.S. just typically don't know that many Italian people, so I'm willing to cut them some slack when they ask dumb questions about New Jersey and Italian people. And, of course, I'll admit that I always got something of a kick out of seeing so much New Jersey (New Jersey! And not even the fashionable parts!) on TV, ethnic stereotypes and all. (I definitely get a kick out of the fact that no one out on the left coast seems to know what to do with my last name. This typically...

My Favorite Nerdy Thing In The Nerd Museum

What You Need To Know About The Sci-Fi Hall Of Fame and Museum After six months of living in C@L, I finally took the plunge last weekend and made the long-awaited and inevitable pilgrimmage to what might be the nerdiest place in an admittedly nerdy town. That is, I finally went to the Science Fiction Museum and Hall Of Fame. A bit of full disclosure before I proceed: I'm a gigantic sci-fi dork. I grew up reading science fiction, and although I don't tear through it like I once did, I'm certainly not above the occasional schlocky sci-fi epic. (That's right. I said sci-fi epic. And I'm not above it!) So the trip to the sci-fi museum is something I've been thinking about for a while. I mean, I'm familiar with the subject area; I wanted to see what this museum thing was all about. Right. So if I had...

How To Make Friends In C@L (Vol. 1): Temple Of The Dog

Not that there's anything wrong with grunge Maybe it's the crappy winter weather (which admittedly hasn't been that crappy of late/ this week), or maybe it's a general feeling that I'm sufficiently settled to have more complex opinions about the town, but lately I've felt empowered to (more publicly) have a sense of humor about my new home. This is all just a polite way of saying that I've probably been a little more obnoxious than usual about C@L of late. In what might become a semi-regular feature here on ThatKid, I'm going to offer some charming ideas for making friends should you ever be in the greater C@L area. And away we go: Imagine that you're in a bar and you spot someone sporting he sort of haircut that the good boys in Pearl Jam and Soundgarden might have sported circa 1991. While of course we respect what those...

Last-Minute Nerdbird Omen!

The sun is shining in C@L; surely the football Gods are trying to tell us something! It's official: the sun is shining in C@L. As a C@L resident, I can vouch for the fact that the sun has been out, ummm, two and a half times since November. But it's out and in effect in C@L on Super Bowl Sunday. Coincidence? Or sign of happy things to come? Nerdbirds, the heavens salute you!...

Can The Nerdbirds Do It?

This article will include my karma-killing Super Bowl XL (tm) prediction C@L almost has football fever. They think they're fired up about the game. They do. You see pockets of excitement around town -- the checkout dudes at the supermarket wearing Nerdbird hats, some jerseys at the office, a Nerdbirds flag on the occasional flagpole, the 12 banner flying atop the Space Needle. (I don't count the jerseys on the employees of the EMPor the Sci-Fi Museum because Paul Allen own those things too. Disqualified!) Still, there are definitely people who are pumped. At the same time, as with most things out here on the Left Coast, folks are a little more mellow about it. Sure, they'd like to see the Nerdbirds win, but no one's going to get too bent out of shape if they don't. People won't be despressed tomorrow at work if the Nerdbirds lose. Certainly the...

Two Weeks of Jealousy, Envy and Contempt (Sort Of)

I suppose I should say something about the NFL Team here in C@L Given the amount of brainpower, attention, and ThatKid column inches that are devoted to the NFL, it would be irresponsible, nay, negligent, of me not to offer some comment on C@L earning a place in Super Bowl Excel. Generally speaking, good on ya, C@L. Your team played a great game, kept their cool, did their thing, and very much earned a trip to the Super Bowl. Never mind the implied insult of it all (that is, it didn't take C@L four tries in the NFC Championship Game to get to the Super Bowl) or that the Panthers looked wounded and uninspired out there. The Seahawks won the NFC regular season title, and now have won the conference championship. There should be no doubts in re: who the best team in the NFC is. It's the Seahawks. Aight....

Here's The Ring, I'll Meet You At The Car

As if proposing in the second quarter of a Sonics - Warriors game on a Tuesday wasn't clumsy enough Best Sonics game of my tenure as a season-ticket holder last night. Sure, the Sonics lost (sigh), but they lost in the most exciting and dramatic possible fashion: a three-pointer to win from the Warriors' Baron Davis with 0.4 seconds remaining in overtime. On top of that, embattled Sonics coach Bob Weiss got tossed for protesting a sequence of horrific calls on controversial Sonics forward Danny Fortson. (In general, I love trafficking in sports-adjectives cliches as above; that is, I have to assume that 30 percent of all articles about Weiss and Fortson contain the words "embattled" and "controversial" as modifiers of the respective names. It's worth noting that "embattled" just means "he'll get fired before the end of the season," and "controversial" means "he's a jerk." Just like "controversial wide...

My C@L Bona Fides, Music Edition

Now that I've seen Death Cab For Cutie, I just need to pick up some performance fleece Lately, I've summed up my fondness for the city of C@L's highly evolved taste in music as follows: C@L is one of the few cities its size where most of the residents -- whether they're into rock music generally or indie label pop specifically -- know what a "Death Cab For Cutie" is. You don't need to listen to the exquisite local indie radio station (though it certainly doesn't hurt) to know that Death Cab For Cutie are a very popular local band that you sure wish would really hit the big time.
